Opera by Gareth Glyn and Mererid Hopwood
Based on the novel by Islwyn Ffowc Elis
Islwyn Ffowc Elis’ vision of the future of his homeland – part utopian, part dystopian - is now realized on the operatic stage in a thrilling version by Wales’ foremost creative artists, composer Gareth Glyn and poet Mererid Hopwood.
On the 60th anniversary of the novel’s publication, the world’s only Welsh-language opera company brings together a stellar cast of native singers to breathe musical life into this famous cautionary tale of love, loss, community and belonging.
The opera is written in Welsh, but thanks to the Sibrwd mobile phone app., performances will be wholly accessible for non-Welsh speakers.
The opera is presented with the kind permission of the Islwyn Ffowc Elis Estate and Gwasg Gomer.

Peter riley - A Singer/Songwriter born and raised in Liverpool, England. Pete Riley has been playing music ever since he can remember,
Pete signed to Atlantic Records resulting in a 2 year tour of the USA with his band Treehouse who went on to release their debut album "Nobody's Monkey" to critical acclaim.
After returning to the U.K. Pete then embarked on a solo career touring solo acoustic in the UK and Ireland. On release of his first solo album "After The Parade" Pete was invited back over to the USA to work with American, multi -platinum selling artist Edwin McCain whom he had struck up a solid friendship with during his previous stints in America. It wasn't long before Pete was asked by Edwin to join his band as a permanent member.
Pete relocated to the USA for a decade and went on to forge a solid writing partnership with Edwin McCain and co-wrote three successful albums as well as co-writing the USA radio hit single's "Shooting Stars" and “Say Anything” the first of which appeared in a Warner Bros T.V. drama about a young Jack and Bobby Kennedy
Since then Pete has been writing/recording and producing with many different artistes worldwide. These include Edwin McCain, Narada Michael Walden, Henry Priestman (The Christians) Maia Sharp, Angie Aparo, Kevin Kinney, and most recently Amy Wadge. Throughout the last few years there has also been numerous TV appearances in the USA (VH1, CBS Good Morning America) and more recently on BBC1 in the UK (The Politics Show) Pete's songs have also featured in the Warner Bros TV drama "Jack and Bobby" and the internationally released Miley Cyrus Disney Movie "The Last Song". and more recently in Ruth Jones Sky One Hit TV Show Stella,
Pete's most recent project has been a 3 album collaboration with singer/songwriter Amy Wadge, resulting in a 6 year touring stint promoting albums Rivers Apart, Afterglow and Bygones.
Andy Collins - is a singer, songwriter, bass player, producer and educator from Swansea, South Wales, UK.
Having honed his chops in the pubs and clubs of South Wales, most notably with local heroes, The Karrots, in 2003 Andy formed The Storys with Rob Thompson, Dai Smith and Steve Balsamo.
Their harmony laden, West-Coast influenced and self produced debut album quickly garnered them friends and fans far and wide.
Elton John, having fallen in love with it, publicly declared the album 'fantastic' and personally invited the band on tour, opening up for him in stadia around Europe - for three summers!
Tours with Joe Cocker, Katie Melua, Runrig and an invite to a special memorial concert for Jim Capaldi followed, and shows with Santana and Celine Dion to over 60,000 people in Amsterdam saw the band get radio play both in the UK and Europe.
The Storys recorded three albums, signing with Warner Bros for the second album, Town Beyond The Trees. Made with erstwhile Paul McCartney and Kate Bush producer Jon Kelly at Real World Studios, the band got major radio support in the UK, and many sessions followed. The band were even invited to play the BBC's legendary DJ Bob Harris' 60th birthday party, where they were joined on stage by Robert Plant and Bernie Marsden for a little midnight jam.
The Storys won a songwriting award for Town beyond the Trees, and several songs were used in TV shows and films. Most notably the US teen drama One Tree Hill, and the Jason Statham heist movie, The Bank Job in which Andy and the boys made a cameo appearance as the wedding band!
When The Storys called it a day, in 2012 Andy released his debut album, Closure, to some great reviews.
His second album, Right Here, Right Now will be released on the 6th of October 2017.
When not making his own music, Andy loves writing with, producing and nurturing the abundance of up and coming talent in South Wales.
Steve Balsamo - is a singer-songwriter from Swansea.
After years of learning the ropes in local rock bands, he shot to prominence in 1997 after playing Jesus to great critical acclaim in the West End revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. After winning a Variety Club Award for the role, Steve decided to return to his first love, writing and performing his own music, and signed to Columbia Records soon after. In 2002 Steve released his debut album, "All I Am" which reached the top 40 in the UK and went on to win Best Male Solo Artist at The Welsh Music Awards the same year.
Gentle 'persuasion' by the head of the label saw Steve return to the stage in the French phenomena Notre Dame De Paris, which was followed by Poe – More Tales Of Mystery and Imagination, a new musical by Alan Parsons Project writer Eric Woolfson. Based on the life and work of Edgar Alan Poe, the show had it's world premiere at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in 2003.
In 2004, Steve formed The Storys, a West Coast influenced harmony country-rock band. The band's highly acclaimed debut album came to the attention of Elton John who, after publicly declaring it "Fantastic!", personally called Steve at home and invited the band to tour Europe with him – twice! The Storys also toured with Joe Cocker, Katie Melua, Celine Dion, Santana, Van Morrison and Tom Jones to name-drop but a few.
The Storys' songs have been featured in the US teen drama One Tree Hill and hit Brit-flick The Bank Job , in which the band also made a cameo appearance playing two of their own songs. They released their second album, "Town Beyond The Trees" in the UK in 2008, again to great reviews. Although calling time on The Storys, the band released a third and final album called "Luck" in the summer of 2010.
After meeting Jon Lord, founder, writer and ex-keyboard player with Deep Purple at The Sunflower Jam in 2007, Steve was asked if he would like to tour the world with him as part of his Concerto For Group And Orchestra band. Steve features on the new studio recording of the Concerto alongside Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden and guitarist Joe Bonamassa.
A huge fan of Jon, his solo work and Purple, Steve feels very privileged to have worked with such a legend and genuinely nice man. Until Jon's recent death, he and Steve were writing and recording for a classical meets rock project. One of the songs, "All Those Years Ago" was used for the title of a book on Jon's life.
Aside from this, Steve is a prolific songwriter, having scored hits around the world with artists as diverse as Meat Loaf, 'Pop Idols' Anthony Callea and Jonatan Cerrada, and Slash of Guns n' Roses fame.
Recently he has released an album called 'Unfolding' with ethereal-voiced folk singer Rosalie Deighton, for a country influenced duet project, Balsamo Deighton. After some great reviews and sold out shows, the duo are currently writing for their second album which they are planning to record in Nashville.
Steve feels blessed to have had many adventures in music which have allowed him to sing on stage with the likes of Roger Daltry, Robert Plant, Mario Frangoulis, Justin Hayward, Lara Fabian, Madeleine Peyroux, Glenn Hughes, Steve Harley, Sam Brown, Lulu, a couple of Stones, a couple of Eagles, some Deep Purples, a couple of Pink Floyds an array of the best players on the planet!
When he's not making music, Steve tries to be a good dad, paints, swims, reads about the paranormal and magick, listens to Radio 4 and thinks too much...
